Academic Applications International began as International Technical Education and Consulting Associates (INTEC) in 1979 (see AAII Charter). The INTEC corporate focus and name was changed to AAII in 1987. Project consulting and instructional services that began under INTEC (see Legacy Projects) continue through AAII, but with an increasing academic emphasis.

The current mission of AAII is to emphasize good stewardship of the world in which we live, with primary focus applied to the human-modified domain. The human-modified world is the natural world into which the human-made has been introduced as entities, subsystems, artifacts, and human activity systems; a world becoming increasingly complex.
